Lab meetings take place most weeks, and can have a few different formats.
Lab meeting formats
Regardless of the format, Kevin will create an agenda at https://pad.bonhamlab.bio for everyone to edit, and post it to the #meetings channel in Zulip. People should add what they’ve worked on in the past week in the ## Individual upates section. If you have any lab business (things not directly related to your project, but that might be of interest to others), you can add it in the
The first part of lab meetings will always be lab business. If you have something that touches on lab operations or that involves the lab as a whole, add it to the agenda under the Lab Business section.
Basic updates format
In this type of lab meeting everyone will “present” for a few minutes based on what they’ve done in the past week. This presentation is informal (no slides), and you should bring in a bit of data or code or a sketch of experimental design, or a figure from a paper that relates to what you’ve been working on.
Everyone should plan to talk for 3-5 minutes, and we may have more discussion that goes for up to 10 min total.
Presentation format
In this type of lab meeting one member of the lab will give a 20-30 min “formal” presentation on their project. This might be a practice talk for an external presentation, or just a way to update everyone on your project as a whole, and practice this method of science communication.
Full time members of the lab should expect to give these presentations ~4 times per year. Summer interns should expect to give a presentation at the end of the summer, part time students should give a presentation once / semester.
Journal Club format
In this type of lab meeting, one member of the lab will give a 20-30 min presentation of a paper that they’ve read and think is relevant to the lab (interpreted very broadly).
NOTE
Papers should be chosen and sent out to the rest of the lab in the
#paperschannel on zulip at least 48 hours before lab meeting starts.
Presentations should include relevant background, and slides for each of the figures for reference, but the discussion does not need to go panel-by-panel. Big ideas can be summarized. Everyone in lab should have read the paper and be prepared to discuss it.
